Meet The Supporters: Anan Abubaker

This is part of our weekly series where we meet some of the people who will be joining the Assembly Line this year. Keep an eye out every Wednesday for a new segment! Please reach out to Westen on Twitter if you are interested in taking part in this.

Westen Shelton: When did you start watching soccer, and what teams do you support?

Anan Abubaker: I started watching soccer since i was a little kid, I want to say 6 because i remember that far back, I come from a family where soccer is tradition and runs in our blood, I have been a Liverpool fan since then, Liverpool is pretty much my life. I have been a fan for 20 Years +! haha

WS: What are some of your goals as the community outreach chair this year?

AA: I chose to run for the position because i believe in communities coming together through sports and mainly Football (soccer) my goals are to use the sport to bring everyone in the city and surrounding area together by creating a family and “hometown team” atmosphere, as a Chicago native we have that mentality with the Chicago Fire and i want to bring that here, get together regardless of age, race, gender or anything else, when the ignite are on we are all one! Together behind the boys!

WS: What is your favorite live soccer moment ever?

AA: I will never forget the 2005 Champions league final, Liverpool down 3-0 at halftime, 3-3 at full time and won in penalties in what i would call the greatest comeback in the sport’s history! i cried at half time, i cried even more at full time as Gerrard lifted that trophy, Gerrard’s first goal and Dudek’s saves will forever be special moments!

Liverpool v Newcastle in 1996 comes as a close second, crazy game with lots of goals! amazing 4-3 win for Liverpool

WS: What are you most looking forward to about the Ignite season coming up?

AA: A LOCAL TEAM! that by itself excites me! can’t wait to see the boys on the pitch and the locals supporting and bringing a nice atmosphere, I am also looking forward to being able to get with other local supporters, hang out and talk football (soccer) and make new friends! LETS GO IGNITEEE!

WS: What are your main hobbies outside of soccer?

AA: This is gonna be sad.. very sad…. but other then soccer i have no other hobbies! I am hobby-less and spend my time either at work or watching soccer/playing soccer/coaching soccer, helping kids develop and doing lots of 1 on 1 coaching sessions is something I do a lot, I love the game and I have dedicated my life to it (and work).

WS: Tell me something that you love about the Lansing area?

AA: I love the sense of community and family you get anywhere you go, everyone gets along together without issues and everyone is always willing to help each other, I love how everyone smiles at you as you walk down the street, I love Old Town, I love downtown Lansing, I love the MSU campus, I really love everything about it, and last but not least; I already love the Ignite and I cannot wait till we get the season rolling!
